Immigrants settled in what eventually became Steele Creek in the 1600s while traveling from Philadelphia to warmer locales. Creek, of course, comes from the neighboring Sugar Creek. Some have speculated that there was a prominent family in the area named Steele, but there is no record of any such family.

Many companies have set up offices in and around Steele Creek, including Microsoft and Siemens. The airport just to the northeast of Steele Creek is also a major supplier of jobs.
Steel Creek offers a wide range of outdoor activities. Top Golf has a location in Steele Creek. Thomas McAlister Winget Park offers many ball fields and courts, including soccer and volleyball, picnic areas, play equipment for all ages, walking trails, a disc golf course, and a gym. The McDowell Nature Center and Preserve allows visitors to observe nature in gardens, hike among native animals, enjoy educational opportunities, boat, kayak, camp, fish, and enjoy picnicking as well as their shaded playground. They allow dogs as long as the dogs are on a 6" leash.
