Matthews, NC

Matthews is an incorporated Town of approximately 25,000 on the southeast border of Charlotte. It is further bound by Mint Hill to the northeast and Stallings to the south. Matthews is a lovely town with an old fashioned main street featuring Renfrow Hardware (a local icon) and a weekly farmer´s market. From it´s beginning in the 1800´s as a village in a farming community, Matthews has steadily grown as a town distinctly separate and unique from Charlotte. For many years it has been a popular community for Charlotte area people who preferred a smaller community to the City of Charlotte. As of 2000, Matthews had just over 8,138 housing units with most of the land fully developed. Construction of the I-485 outer beltway now provides easy access to major interstate highways I-77 and I-85, to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, and increases its accessibility to regional and national commerce.

The town has a real sense of itself with numerous community-sponsored events, a Community Center, a library, playgrounds, ball fields and holiday functions, including the annual Stumptown Festival. (Matthews was referred to as Stumptown when the original clearing of land left its mark).  While Matthews has subdivisions of recent vintage and major shopping nearby, much of area close to downtown still offers a glimpse of Matthews´ picturesque past, with a number of buildings on the Historical Register.
