Anyone considering a Charlotte relocation has to have this area on their "short list". Minutes south of Charlotte and the North Carolina/South Carolina border is the Town of Fort Mill, which has changed little over many years. It has retained its small town atmosphere and charm of the Old South. Its short "main street" with facades of the past and the ever-present railroad tracks remind one of times not so fast. Approximately 8,000 people live inside the Town's corporate limits with a total of nearly 30,000 people residing within the entire Township. It the Township that is an important aspect of the Charlotte real estate market.
Through much of the twentieth century the town prospered as the home of The Springs Cotton Mills (now Spring Industries) while the company grew from a single mill to a regional textile giant. Although Springs no longer manufactures in Fort Mill, its legacy lives on in the deeds of the omni-present names of its past leaders - Springs and Close.
Fort Mill offers a quality of life that has obvious appeal to residents and newcomers alike. And while most of the new residents have employment in the Charlotte area, it may be unfair to refer to Fort Mill as a "bedroom" community. Many buyers who work in Charlotte simply choose the small town life over the city life.
Some of the popular larger commuities in Fort Mill Township have been Tega Cay (which is now incorporated), Regent Park and Bailiwyck. But today's hot number is Baxter Village, a mixed use development near I-77. There are many new home commuities, in addition to condo, townhome and active adult developments.
The Fort Mill schools are noted for being excellent and continually receive top ratings when compared to other schools in the area. Given the more relaxed pace, plus lower taxes and good schools, Fort Mill is an easy choice for many people who are looking for Charlotte real estate.
