| South Charlotte North Carolina |
Just as the initial growth of fine neighborhoods in Old Charlotte grew to the south of uptown, later growth followed a similar pattern. Today, South Charlotte is where you will find many of the region's most desirable neighborhoods. That growth has now continued all the way to the city's southern edge....where two of Mecklenburg's most historic towns, Matthews and Pineville, blend seamlessly into Charlotte.
When you mention South Charlotte to anyone familiar with Charlotte and most newcomers, two words will likely roll off their tongues.... SouthPark and Ballantyne. These are the two major destinations for living, shopping and working on the south side of the city. And this is where you will find many of the finest South Charlotte NC homes. |

SouthPark, ten minutes from Center City, had its major growth in the 1960´s through the 1980´s and, as a consequence, most of the homes feature traditional floor plans and exteriors. Here you will find some of the last ranch style homes built in quantity in Charlotte. Later, as lots became smaller and homes became larger, the two-story homes became more standard. However, in a few areas of SouthPark you can find more current upscale homes.
The area offers a wide variety of homes in South Charlotte...from the small ranches of Beverly Woods to the "mansions" of the gated communities of Morrocroft and Seven Eagles. Some of the other popular neighborhoods in the South Park area are Foxcroft, Barclay Downs, Montibello, Stonecroft, Quail Hollow and Royden. And while all of the subdivisions have long since been developed, growth still continues with numerous in-fill developments of pricy upscale townhomes, apartments & some extremely nice new homes South Charlotte.
Even with its wonderful selection of homes & neighborhoods, South Park would not be South Park without SouthPark Mall...plus its offices, hotels, dining and other retail. SouthPark is the second-largest business district in the state. And with stores such as Tiffany, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Crate & Barrel and many others, SouthPark offers some the finest shopping in the Southeast. Wonderful fine dining options include both great local & national restaurants. And visitors have a wide choice of excellent hotels. |
| South Charlotte Neighborhoods :: Ballantyne Homes |
|
If SouthPark represents the established, Ballantyne epitomizes the new. Begun in the early 1990´s, it is a beautifully planned development of 2,000 acres on what was once a hunting preserve in the "country". Today it is practically a city within a city, although development has reached far beyond the original 2,000 acres. With Ballantyne as the hub, residential neighborhoods have pushed into Union County, as well as Lancaster & York Counties of South Carolina.
The town center has shops, restaurants and a YMCA. And the Ballantyne area also boasts several new public schools. Within its borders are a 535-acre corporate park, which includes office buildings, a resort hotel, an 18-hole daily-fee golf course and the Dana Rader School of Golf. The golf course has been recognized as one of the best in the state and Dana Rader´s school ranks as one of the 25 best in the country.
The residential center-piece of Ballantyne is Ballantyne Country Club which offers upscale homes ranging from the $500s to more than $2 million, as well as a private 18-hole golf course. Ballantyne also boast a wide variety of other subdivisions, plus many condo & town home communities. |

South Charlotte is much more than South Park & Ballantyne. Close in is the area of Cotswold, which offers easy access to Downtown Charlotte. and is known for its lovely, older neighborhoods and newly renovated shopping center. Along Park Road are several charming neighborhoods dating back to the 1950s, including Madison Park, which features brick ranches and tall trees.
And dozens of neighborhoods ? in a variety of price ranges ? are accessible from the major arteries of Providence Road, Carmel Road, Park Road, Rea Road and N.C. 51 (Pineville - Matthews Road), as are countless shopping venues. The neighborhoods of South Charlotte are too many to note; however, some of the larger, popular ones include: Piper Glen, Providence Country Club, Bridgehampton, Ardrey, Berkeley, Southampton, Providence Plantation and Thornhill.
As residential development pushed south, a number of major retail/office hubs came on the scene as trading areas were defined. Hubs over the past twenty years have included The Arboretum, Stonecrest & The Promenade, with each seemingly a vast improvement over the one before. The latest large scale hub, Blakeney, is truly spectacular, with retail offerings to rival many malls and services to rival private clubs. The towns of Pineville & Matthews also offer attractive residential & shopping alternatives to Charlotte proper.
